The Disappearance of Tyler Stice
Living in Kingman, Arizona, Tyler worked at a local furnishings company, attended college, and hoped to eventually transfer to Northern Arizona University. He was described by family members as quiet and introverted. He enjoyed gaming, photography, and loved his black Ford Mustang.
Nothing about Tyler’s life suggested he was preparing to disappear.
A Sudden Change in Routine
On June 20, 2016, Tyler did something unusual — he skipped work.
According to his family, Tyler simply said he “needed some time to think.” He spent part of the day with his father before returning to his room.
The following morning, June 21, Tyler appeared to leave home around 5:30 a.m. for work. Signs indicated he had prepared his lunch as usual, and nothing seemed out of place.
But Tyler never arrived at his job.
When his employer contacted Tyler’s mother later that day, she immediately knew something was wrong. Repeated calls to Tyler’s cell phone went directly to voicemail, and family members had not heard from him.
His Car Is Found in the Mountains
Four days later, on June 25, Tyler’s black Mustang was discovered abandoned near the Deer Canyon Recreation Area in the Hualapai Mountains outside Kingman.
The location was remote, surrounded by rugged terrain and accessed primarily by Hualapai Mountain Road.
Tyler himself was nowhere to be found.
His wallet, keys, cell phone, and laptop were missing. However, investigators found his camera inside the trunk of the vehicle. Family members noted that Tyler rarely went anywhere without his camera, making its presence in the car particularly unusual.
Search teams, including cadaver dogs and volunteers, combed the mountainous terrain but found no trace of the missing young man.
A Puzzling Purchase
As investigators retraced Tyler’s final days, they discovered that shortly before his disappearance, Tyler had purchased a rifle and ammunition.
The purchase surprised those closest to him. Family members said Tyler had little interest in firearms, hunting, or outdoor activities.
The rifle has never been recovered.
Authorities also determined that Tyler’s cell phone made a brief outgoing call to his mother’s number the morning he disappeared. The call lasted only one second and originated from the Hualapai Mountain area
Questions Without Answers
Over the years, numerous theories have emerged.
Some believe Tyler may have chosen to disappear voluntarily. Others wonder whether he arranged to meet someone he knew through online gaming or social media. Still others suspect foul play.
Online discussions have also focused on Tyler’s family dynamics. However, no evidence has been publicly released linking any family member to his disappearance, and no suspects have been named.
With so few answers and no physical evidence, investigators have been unable to determine exactly what happened to Tyler Stice.
The Loss of His Biggest Advocate
Tyler’s older sister, Jessica, became one of the strongest voices keeping his case alive. She organized searches, maintained social media pages dedicated to Tyler, and worked tirelessly to keep his name in the public eye.
Tragically, Jessica passed away in 2018 at just 32 years old.
Despite her death, Tyler’s family and supporters continue searching for answers.
